Zero Spam

|

SPAM is unwanted, unsolicited email, normally of a commercial nature. This SPAM can and does advertise everything from body enhancement schemes to pornographic web sites.

We've seen the percentage of SPAM exceed 70% of the total email entering our network on a regular basis and are already taking many steps to identify, label, and block this unwanted email. While we're able to deal with a large percentage of this SPAM we've been looking for methods that will allow YOU to maintain your own SPAM filters and receive only the email that YOU want to receive.

Through a combination of our email server and its WebMail component you can now set up your own email White List which has the potential of taking the percentage of SPAM in your email to ZERO.

We've tested this filtering mode on several of our test email addresses that were receiving from 75 - 150 SPAM emails per day. After setting up this filter on these test addresses they received ZERO SPAM emails! The only emails that were delivered were those that were allowed by the White List.

Here's how it works...

Using the Black/White List function of the WebMail program you set up a list of email addresses and domains from which you will accept email. Once this is done you can set up the Zero SPAM filter that will DELETE all email coming from sources not on your White List.

This is an OPTIONAL SPAM filter and not all users will be able to take advantage of its functionality. If you normally receive email from many different addresses, i.e. other Ebay users, this filter is not for you as these emails would be blocked from delivery to you.

To set up your White List and Zero SPAM filter just follow the steps listed below...

For ease in use you may want to print this page and keep it near your keyboard while setting up your Zero SPAM filters.

Be sure to review the NOTES section at the bottom of this page!

|
1) Log into our WebMail function at:

|
2) Once logged into our WebMail function select SETTINGS and then Black & White List from the menu of available functions.

|
3) You will then see a screen similar to that shown below. This screen sets up the first email domain to be placed on your White List. It's a good idea to set up your White List prior to entering/enabling the Zero SPAM filter.

Place a check mark in the box labelled "Enable"

Place a dot in the Action: Accept circle

Place a dot in the Filter circle

In the "Item:" drop down menu select "SENDER"

DO NOT change the selection in the "Function:" drop down

Type @pensys.com into the "String:" field - this will allow email from PenSys users to be delivered to you

Click the ADD button

|
4) You will now see a screen similar to that shown below in which your first White List entry appears under the Function Bar. You may now enter the Zero SPAM filter.

Place a check mark in the box labelled "Enable"

Place a dot in the Action: Delete circle

Place a dot in the Filter circle

In the "Item:" drop down menu select "SENDER"

DO NOT change the selection in the "Function:" drop down

Place a check mark in the box labelled "NOT"

Type THIS_FILTER_MUST_BE_ON_THE_BOTTOM - DO_NOT_MODIFY into the "String:" field

Click the ADD button

You have now created a filter that will block ALL email except that coming from domains and addresses on your White List.

|
5) You can now enter additional domains and/or email addresses into your White List. The screen below shows how to enter the email address: john.doe@somedomain.com

|
6) After adding additional domains and/or email addresses to your White List it is CRITICAL that you be sure that the Zero SPAM filter be on the BOTTOM of the Function list.

This can be accomplished by simply highlighting the filter in the Function list and then using the UP or DOWN buttons as pictured below to actually move the filter to the BOTTOM of the Function list.

NOTES

These filters are executed in a top down order, therefore any filters BELOW the Zero SPAM filter set up in step 4 will not be used as the Zero SPAM filter deletes all emails that make it to the position of the Zero SPAM filter in the Function list.

When setting up the White List entry to specify an entire domain the "@" symbol is only necessary when you enter the Peninsula Systems "@pensys" domain. Through a little experimentation you can determine whether or not you use the "@" symbol for other domains.

You may enter multiple domains, etc. in the same filter, the "String:" field, as long as you separate them with a semi-colon, ";", DO NOT put any spaces in the entry.

We recommend setting up all of your White List entries prior to setting up the Zero SPAM filter. Doing this will minimize the possibility of losing emails that may be coming in as you set up your filters.
